Nikola Tesla was born on July 10th, 1856 in Smiljan, Austrian Empire which is now Croatia.
He claimed to have gotten his creativity and photographic memory from his mother Djuka Mandic, a very intelligent woman who invented various household tools and appliances. His Father, Milutin Tesla, was a Serbian Orthodox Priest.
Nikola attended two different universities, The Polytechnic Institute in Graz, Austria, and the University of Prague. In his first year in Graz, he received the highest marks in his classes, never missing a lecture. He lost his scholarship in the end of his second year, and never finished his degree. He traveled to the University of Prague after a brief hiatus, and due to a language barrier was never able to do more than audit his classes.
